Allergies, Anaphylaxis, Epinephrine -- and Things You Likely Didn't Know

Description:
Learn what's happening in the body during a severe allergic reaction, why epinephrine helps and when to use it, and what about antihistamines?!: the life-saving importance of them, which to take, when to take, how much to take, for how long to take, and why -- crucial information which prescribers of epinephrine rarely tell their patients.

Intended Audience: This video presents life-saving information important for:

  • people who are allergic to something
(note: even mild allergies can progress to anaphylaxis with subsequent exposures),
  • people who do not have an allergy but go places where a call for help will not result in an ambulance arrival in 10 minutes
(note: you can be not allergic to something and then suffer an allergic reaction the next exposure)
  • all first aid providers

Note: most of the content of this video is incorporated in our dtWFA course.

Hiking & Other Outdoor Adventure Safety a.k.a. Wilderness Rescues and Being Prepared: A Systems Approach

Description:
  • Gain a solid understanding of the many steps in a wilderness rescue, and eye-openingly how surprisingly long it takes -- as step-by-step illustrated with an example of a 3-mile rescue that took 10½ hours.
  • Learn how a short simple day trip can easily turn into an unexpected overnighter, and an overnighter can turn into extra night(s)
    • "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail," so a popular quote goes.
    • Learn how to prepare to be out there for much longer than anticipated, not with a ubiquitous "10-essentials" list which has the magic number of 10 and perhaps should change depending on activity, duration, location, season etc. -- but rather, from a more holistic and inclusive systems perspective which will guide you to decide what you need to bring and train in, for your and others' safety and survival.
  • Q&A (last 17 minutes) by Virginia Master Naturalists volunteer Leaders. Many thanks to Michelle Prysby for having hosted and made this continuing education webinar both possible and accessible.

Intended Audience: Casual Hikers through multi-night Outdoor Adventurers.

Subtitles: available in English

Duration: 41 minutes NOTE: no video (audio only) the first 1½ minutes, during welcoming remarks by Virginia Master Naturalist Program Director Michelle Prysby.
