> As with any medication, before using, ask your patient if they have a chemical sensitivity to topical iodine. Do they get a skin rash? If yes, consider using a different antiseptic agent instead.

> Full strength povidone-iodine (10%) is too high of a concentration for an open wound; pour it into water before use. One percent solution in water is great for cleaning wounds. If you dilute it into clear but unclean water such as stream water for wound-cleaning, mix and let the solution sit for a half hour before use, to have the iodine kill pathogens in the water first. If you dilute it into already-clean (pathogen-free) water, then no need to wait the half hour.
